Episode 385 - Drawing the line

Jul 23, 2018

In this Quackcast we talk about where the line is for YOU in your work about what subjects and imagery are too far for you. What is too horrible, too controversial, too extreme for you to approach? Is it blood and gore, something controversial and political, swearing, religious, sexual? Maybe you have other borders… perhaps something is too cute, sickly sweet and saccharine?

Topics and Show Notes

We used Tantz's newspost for inspiration and read out all the comments of the fantastic DDers who told us about their own personal limits.

This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Ink LaRue. Oooooh yeeeaah, melodic vocals tied with a gentle pop funk sound. This is a sexy track that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It just wants to have a bit of fun.

hey, usedbooks, didn't mean to imply any kind of offense. it's a generality that i've heard brought up by many people and it's not wrong, either. Just often times, it becomes a bit of a one-note complaint by people and I saw it as a good opportunity to talk about it. What you don't enjoy is completely up to you and I'd never intended to try to tell you what you can and cannot personally enjoy.

Hahaha! So much arseholery 😂

Or rather, I am more disturbed by existential stuff. Those are the stories that haunt me, and I won't rewatch. I could rewatch gore all the livelong day, but it wouldn't do anything for me.

Btw, didn't mean to criticize the horror genre or its fans. Just a take on it from someone who never liked it but recently realized I actually do ENJOY some horror -- but the horror of two generations ago. A good work evokes emotion. It turns out fear comes in many flavors, and I like the existential stuff and not the disgust-fear response. (To the point that my brain takes me entirely out of a graphic movie and sets it down in the middle of a fun house where I start analyzing the technical aspects of how they make the imagery.)

And the most disturbing scene thus far in Used Books was designed deliberately to show the nature and stakes involved with a particular antagonist. Now that those are set, I don't have to "show" that level again. Suggestion will be enough. (It was so hard to write/draw. Especially after the same antagonist made me write a long-recurring minor character to her less-graphic death.)

Also for the record, my autocorrect capitalized asshole, so I guess that makes me Ms. Asshole, queen of assholes.

For the record, 1. I am an Asshole. 2. I was lumping ALL "show it" horror together and not comparing the types of effects (instead, comparing any shown horror to the use of silhouettes, cutaway, and suggestions). The unknown/unseen is scarier. Your imagination fills in the detail. (Or maybe my imagination is just more terrifying than most.)
