Hello, everyone, and welcome to Panel by Panel, a periodic exploration of comic panels around The Duck.

This week we're looking at another comic by user HawkAndFloAdventures, who has become one of the most prolific creators on the site, grinding out comic after comic. it's very admirable and I am always pleased to check in with their progress. This week we're looking at an update from Phantom Force 3000 titled “Follow Your Dreams.”

Specifically, we'll be looking at one panel that introduces a challenging new angle on the events of the page:

So, as we can see, we have a largely empty panel, with a central figure. With that said, the unusual angle of action is an inherently challenging option when drawing a comic panel. In the context of the larger page, it is just one panel of several that depicts an action sequence, but the unique angle really helps the panel to stand out.

From a technical standpoint, the panel is drawn fairly well. it's not hard to tell what exactly we're seeing. There are minor issues in the area of anatomy and proportion, but we never lose track of what we are meant to see here. Additionally, I think the largely empty background is a little bit of a problem. Even some slight texture to indicate the floor would help quite a bit. The most significant issue, however, is that the page violates the generally accepted 180-degree rule where we keep flipping to different sides of the character without a particular reason for it. Like any rule, this can be broken, but for the purposes of this page, I feel like it would have been better to follow the established direction.

Otherwise, it's always fun to see where this creator is going and what new things they are trying. You gotta respect it.

I think of the empty background as a strong point here. The way I see it we're meant to follow the character into their dream, and the combination of misty whiteness and angle, which gives it all a sense of detachment or distance, does a great job at creating a dream-like quality.
