Toxicity in Art

I am convinced that the amazing DD community has spoiled me.

I don't even kid. It is a place where I can experiment with my art and feel like I'll be accepted even if I come up with a dud; that feedback will be given in an elegant, even discreet way and always in constructive manners that seek to help me improve. There's a sense of celebration and enthusiasm about our art. We thrive and relish in each others' achievements and we celebrate each other.

Speaking of which, consider contributing if you are able to the DD Awards that are underway in judging and prepping presentations as we speak!

But it really doesn't seem to be the case in other art communities. I've come across several videos talking about the extreme toxicity of communities like “Art Tik Tok” and elsewhere, where artists are bashed and driven to quit their art or social media or both because what they create isn't ‘liked’ by other artists.

I find that appalling, and frankly, bizarre. That one would take time out of their day to harrass and harrow another artists because they don't like their style, or what tutorials they make for others, or how they choose to illustrate characters, or anything else. Art is supposed to be about personal expression and liberation. Not a strict adherence to whatever is mandated by some kind of posse that patrols the platform(s).

I could dive into what makes an artist attack another artist, but I honestly don't want to, it's a cold and unhappy place that produces such behaviors. Or perhaps “Art TikTok” or wherever else this is taking place is filled with young folk that haven't yet matured enough to realize that going on witch hunts against their peers only weakens their whole.

Whatever the case, hearing about this kind of terrible situation made me appreciate what we have here on this platform, and be thankful way before it's time for Thanksgiving :)

Thank you for being awesome, DDers, and keeping this place awesome. No matter how much one moderates, it takes good people to cooperate and adhere to common, good sense.

Yes, we're kind of spoiled by the Duck. Seems like we're the ones to show by example how to have an online community that's fun and worthwhile to be part of. ... "Fix these social media!" jk 😁

"Fix this comic..." - reading something like that makes me want to punch whoever wrote it. Goes to show that hate is contagious. Same for the "Bad Webcomics Wiki" which is not about art criticism as it pretends but just about bashing everyone who has the nerve to produce anything original and even dare upload it. However, I don't punch people; in fact I pity them after one or two seconds' thought. You see, if (usually) grown people apparently have such a low self-esteem that they need to resort to primitive schoolyard bullying - because that's just what it is - to cope with their own perceived patheticness, that's just sad.

The negativity of the internet in general is kind of exhausting. I’ve grown so tired of it all. The Duck genuinely remains one of the few places I feel like I can even contribute. Through my own inadequacies I admit I often feel like an outsider even here but it still remains true that it’s one of the more welcoming places I’ve found. Whatever I may feel is irrelevant. Genuinely, never change. You guys are all awesome.

We have a great community here on the Duck. Very diverse in the true sense. Pretty much something for everyone. Occasionally some one will say or post a negative comment. Constructive criticism is fine. If they are just being nasty, I ignore them (it can't bother me if I don't value their opinion). Not everyone likes everything. I chalk it up to difference of opinion. Again, we have a great and positive community here on Drunk Duck.

It's unfortunate that the landscape is so frequently so toxic, but social media by nature encourages toxicity. It doesn't help that, for ages, artists have been expected to "just suck it up" and "grow a thicker skin" when even in formal schooling or professional training, it's de rigueur to just wholesale abuse artists under the guise of "critique". I'm glad it's more accepting here in general.

Hate ruins everything. That is my philosophy. That and I am sick of hearing about the stuff that is debatably bad. I want to hear about the stuff that's good.

It's one thing if people post about their dislike for an artists' work but to respond to their posting directly, when they're bearing their pride and precious creation, its a really horrible thing to do. If they're super mega popular with thousands or hundreds of thousands of likes or whatever then a few nasty words will presumably be swallowed up in the morass of positivism. But if it's a typical artists without that huge support network then it's especially cruel.

Some of my concerns when I first came here were from seeing how artists often treat each other on places like Twitter (back then it was called that). How instead of not engaging with something they disliked or disagreed, they felt compelled to organize boycotts and mild harassment campaigns. How someone who didn't live up to the unwritten standards of a community became persona non grata. I do have my fair share of criticism when it comes to million dollar movies for example and I'm happy to point out my more critical takes on anyone's work here in private (constructively) if they should request such, but I don't see any gain in doing that publicly to artists who're just trying to get by and enjoy themselves. Even if I'm not a fan of someone else's art, I'd want that person to manage doing what makes them happy and it's how I'd like to be treated as well. Which is the reason I'm glad to be a part of The Duck.
