How would society deal with it?

Would it be a catastrophic change or a gradual change?

There's nothing really world-breaking going on in Used Books. It's really some mundane grudges and organized crime. If you aren't part of that circle, it doesn't really affect you. It honestly is pretty bland and pleasant compared to the underworld of real cities. So, I guess criminals would be far more civil and the upper class would be strangely down-to-earth.

My side pet project, Strange Creatures, is a different matter entirely. Since I write it with a great emphasis on realism and realness, I'd say if it happened in real life, it would be exactly as it is in the story. :P (It is the result of my taking the “write what you know”mantra to heart.) I daresay the real government or local law enforcement would probably have ended the entire story WAY early on, though (barring a shutdown, of course).

Ehm… they kinda did happen, and contributed to the world demanding the Nuremberg Trials.

The recent events of Pinky TA show weapon tests… That happens all the time. Usually by private companies though.
governments would just have spies trying to find out about it, pretty standard stuff really.

There would be a poorly researched report in a local newspaper. The world at large would remain largely unmoved.
