The nicknames are coming from the gameplay so far, or at least that is how it's been done over the last few games. I don't know… I was the bomber in the last game and got the pleasure of blowing up several people, leading to my nickname.

If people does something interesting that deserves a nickname, one is usually given. Nicknames can not be requested, they have to be suggested by other players.
Also, I went a bit trigger happy when dishing out titles during the sign up. For example, the one I gave therealtj is not intended to stick. I was just being silly when he told me that he didn't read the rules.
