The Cull - Page 29

So here we are - the final page of Chapter 1. I really wanted to convey the isolation Saphyr finds herself in at this particular moment and that, while there may still be a ray of hope, it is far, far in the distance and out of reach. The original pencils for this page didn't quite do that justice and I had a really tough time getting the scale of the foreground and background right so that it was clear those bars in the front and not so wide apart that Saphyr could just walk through them - we are just peeking through them into her cell of sorts.
Clearly, recent events have shaken our heroine and it remains to be seen (if she ever escapes her predicament - The Pit still awaits!) if she will emerge with her body and spirit intact and unchanged.
These and many more questions will be answered in the second chapter - ‘The Book’.
Next week I'll be uploading a bonus page, just to round out the 30 pages in the first chapter - or it might end up being the cover for the second chapter, not quite sure yet. The next actual page will be coming as usual, two weeks from now.
Thanks to all the current readers and all those who stuck with me throughout, I appreciate the support and enthusiasm - here's to the next 30 pages!

Thanks again guys - I can see I almost kicked off a theological debate. It's quite humbling to see each of you deriving certain meanings and messages from this page, it was intended in a way, but I'm quite fascinated with the interpretations you've come up with - because I wasn't thinking about that consciously when I was drawing the page, but they do make a lot of sense. Obviously, Saphyr's words here are such that we can't help but draw parallels to our world, but where those parallels will take us remains to be seen. The next chapter will answer some, but certainly not all questions, and it remains to be seen if Saphyr survives to see the end of the tale...

She's about to be born again... The power of the Goddess compels you! The power of the Goddess compels you!...

I agree with KimLuster: The environment looks halfway between a cathedral and a giant birthing canal. I mean that as a compliment. I feel that for this comic, both of those interpretations are equally appropriate and meaningful.

Also... Um.... Hmmm even though I think this page is absolutely gorgeous, the arcs framing our heroine... the first thing I thought of was a vagina haha... *slaps self* Maybe a sort of rebirth is coming...?

@tupapayon: well... perhaps...(depending on one's personal theology)... but I'm certain Big 'J' didn't know that was gonna be the result at the time (why else cry out for it to be taken?), and it was a helluva road getting there!! Regardless, the angst is palpable!!

@Kim: actually the result was magnificent... He was resurrected and is at the right hand of the Father... Anyways... I cry when angels deserve to die... The feeling of abandonment and despair is very nicely rendered... IMO...

Oh Lordy - Jesus asked the same thing - results weren't pretty!! This is just beautiful stuff!!

That's a great question.
