Using this grey goopy stuff between your ears makes you dangerous in the eyes of others who have considerably less of it, even if you don't feel like being dangerous to anyone at all. Ever since that hospital job way back, I've come to believe that this simple fact of life might explain much of the various crap that was or still is going on in this world at any given place and any point in time.

I had talks like that, too, and stood my ground. Why in the world this kind of people thinks that this assesses their authority is still beyond me. Oh, they may in theory be able to fire you, but that's not authority, that's just the bullying that's the hallmark of small minds because that's the one single skill they have. The executive who had it in for me back then - for all I know being on someone's hit list is the norm in this job - was female, but that doesn't make it any better, more like worse. In both cases it's the networks they build that make life hard for anyone who dares use their brains.
